That's my big Boner, a defretted '89 Fender USA Jazz
Heavy bass, only Fender I've ever played with great neck balance.
No idea if that's because of the elongated horn.
The tuners look way cool on this bass

I would definitely go a Fretless Steinberger

    Or an old Musicman

Yeah, a Fretless jazz sounds like candy. Don’t know if they ever made one from the factory like those maple fingerboard P’s.

You know Icehouse’s touring bassist Glenn Krawczk (or something that begins with a K followed by a bunch of consonants) played a lined Fretless four string XL2 live at The Ritz in 1986.

So are you looking for a 4 or 5 string?

I wonder, why have Steinbergers fallen out of favor lately? Or is it my idea?

It’s because they’re so expensive- they always were (even new). But the sound and reliability are par none, particularly for a guy who lives on a boat. I contacted Ned a while back and asked him why they stopped making the XL series and he said it just wasn’t economically feasible- for one thing they didn’t break and after the initial fad purchases by wealthy rock stars, there weren’t enough sales to support the company- think about it, would you have paid 5 US grand for a bass back in 1988?

You should consider the std bubinga vette- occasionally you'll find one on eBay. In my case I had to special order mine. Being a novice at the time I got the four string fretless 'vette I didn't realize that four out of the five songs that inspired me to play fretless invoked the low B.

Just a heads up RIP. That looks to be a Rockbass with a few mods. And at near $1200 shipped... is way over priced.

There is a new black RB Fortress on Reverb for $860, but for near the same price, get one of the German ones and defret it yourself.

I noticed the maple neck and was thinking the same thing. If it was in the 5 to $600.00 range it'd be tempting.....beautiful bass though, and I'm sure it plays great

Alright, here's mine. The Stormtrooper (Epiphone Toby, defretted and modded). Apologies for the obnoxious sized photo, I'll change to a link if that's preferred.

No apologies necessary- it's beautiful! I tried to upload a large photo and it wouldn't let me. I had to reduced mine first.

So what kind of strings are those?

La Bella nylons. Keep the fretboard grooves to a minimum (and adds a bit of the signature fretless mwah)

I bet you left those two in a room overnight only to discover baby Streamer next to them the next day.
